As someone who has dabbled with pornography (watching not partaking!!!) I have always struggled with the concept of the Obscene Publications Act (all variations). The chances are that this is simply because I hold a very liberal view in life and do not like "nanny state" interference, you know the sort,
"We don't think that this is suitable for you so won't let you look at it." Oh, come on, I'm a fully fleshed adult and I've been capable of independent thought for a while now. Next you'll be telling me that I can't protest outside parliament if I don't like what the politicians inside are doing............................ oh, hold on.
Anyway, I digress. I was told by an acquiantance the other day, one with a very conservative view of society (liberal and conservative does not directly mean political affiliation btw) who said that there are going to be planned changes to the law re: Extreme Pornography and possessing it.
I'll be honest, extreme porn isn't my cup of tea, but I have met people who do like it, and they are perfectly normal folk who, strangely enough, aren't serial killers!!!!! And from what I've heard, the people who take part are mostly consenting (although without any regulating body it is difficult to substantiate)
The premise is that by making it illegal to possess, violent sexual attacks may drop. Evidence - zero. So it would be a pre-emptive measure that would cost millions to implement and with no guarantees. Excellent.
But then it makes you think. It is unacceptable to possess sexual material that contains elements of violence, but it is fully acceptable to possess violent material that isn't of a sexual nature and invariably a lot more extreme?
My head hurts.
