So, some poor fool has stuck his head above the parapet and announced that after long and detailed research that unprotected sex can actually be good for our mental wellbeing.

To quote the good professor, Stuart Brody,

"Evolution is not politically correct, so of the very broad range of potential sexual behaviour, there is actually only one that is consistently associated with better physical and mental health and that is the one sexual behaviour that would be favoured by evolution. That is not accidental."

Basically (and this is my VERY lay interpretation of this) people who use condoms aren't usually very good at dealing with stress. This raises other quesitons about his method of research, but I'll not go into that here.

The reaction of the Sexual Health Campaigners is what's got me. Tony Kerridge of Marie Stopes,

"I would have thought that the mental health of anyone would be tested if they found out they had a sexually transmitted disease or that there was an unwanted pregnancy."

The man has a point. And if I contracted a STI then my mental wellbeing would certainly be tested, especially as I'd want to know what my wife has been upto!

You see, the top and bottom of the whole article and the response of Mr Kerridge (and others) is about casual sex. It manages to conveniently ignore the whole section of society that is in a steady relationship and either use other (non-barrier) methods of contraception or simply incapable of pregnancy for whatever reason.

And IF some lunatic has read the results of this experiment and thinks that it is the green light they needed to bin the rubbers and shag around then surely THEIR mental wellbeing needs bringing to account?

Until then, you think that it might be possible to let Prof. Brody report his results without being virtually accused of single-handedly causing a new baby boom and HIV pandemic?
